Gumbo ZÃ?Â'Herbes is traditionally made on Holy Thursday for Good FridayÃ?Â's meal. But to vegans, this gumbo is always welcome and always in season! If itÃ?Â's a green leafy vegetable, itÃ?Â's in there. Our own Joe Medeiros will show us how itÃ?Â's done. WeÃ?Â'll start it @ 2:00 and according to Joe it simmers for a few hours so during that time we can play board games. I have Urban Myths and Cranium. But, if you have a favorite to bring please do so. Sorry to inform, my house is too small for Twister. ; ) WeÃ?Â'll serve the Gumbo over rice about 5:00. If youÃ?Â'd like, bring cookies for a dessert cookie swap.
The first get together will be Wednesday, October 21. Knitters of all levels welcome! Bring your projects and friends for a relaxing evening of needle work. The meeting location will be in Maynard.
Member of the Vegan Metro West Network and avid reader, Robin Schulman has suggested we start a book club. Great idea Robin! Over the past months books related to veganism on compassion, sustainability and health are coming out faster than I can keep up. Among the newer releases are - Ã?Â"Eating AnimalsÃ?Â" by Jonathan Safran Foer, Ã?Â"Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs and Wear Cows: An introduction to CarnismÃ?Â" by Melanie Joy and Ã?Â"The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the PlanetÃ?Â" by Alicia Silverstone. With all this new found knowledge, Robin and I feel the need to talk about it! She has graciously offered her house for book club meetings. ItÃ?Â's difficult to get these newer, high demand books out from the library, so we decided to begin with Ã?Â"The World Peace DietÃ?Â" by Dr. Will Tuttle. Please be prepared to discuss what you have read. We will have a leader to guide discussion of the topics presented in the book. http://www.willtuttle.com/

We will make our own vegan spring rolls and play some board games, too! Spring roll fillings and wrappers will be provided; please bring your own beverages and other dishes to share if you like. Please note that other friends of the organizers may also attend, so we can't guarantee everything will be vegan, but we will ask all attendees to label anything they bring if not vegan. We'll make a savory spring roll, with cabbage, carrots, tofu, and a spicy peanut dipping sauce, and a sweet one, with fruit and chocolate sauce for dipping. Board games (probably starting around 7-ish) may include Apples to Apples, Sequence, Urban Myths, Tri-Ominoes, Eco-Flux, and whatever else people bring.
